Change of command
Maj. Gen. Michael Carey, 20th Air Force commander, Col. H.B. Brual, exiting 341st Missile Wing commander, and Col. Robert Stanley, newly appointed 341st MW commander, share some laughs before the change of command ceremony Feb. 8 at the 3-Bay Hangar. UK woman loses £10k in online dating scam – Afghanistan soldier
April 11th, 2009
A while back, I warned about a common online dating scam involving an Iraqi soldier.
Now news has come out about a British woman who fell victim to a very similar scam, losing £10k in the process. The scammer pretended to be an American soldier serving in Afghanistan.
This is a very common scam nowadays and so it’s worth keeping your wits about you. It always pains me to see women (and men) fall for these scams. Just think – even if this pretend soldier hadn’t been an outright scammer, what sort of relationship are you building if you start it by financially supporting someone you’ve only just met on the Internet?
Never give any money to someone you met online and if in doubt, let your dating site’s support team know you’ve been asked for money and ask their opinion (this is one of the reasons why it pays to date on a reputable dating site with a good support team).
You can read the rest of the article about this latest scam victim here.
UPDATE: This post has been gathering quite a lot of very useful comments from women who have either been victims of similar fraud or have been contacted by scammers. It’s essential reading if you suspect the person you have been talking to online may be a scammer. All opinions expressed below represent only the people who posted them. If you have a problem with any of the posts and would like them removed please contact me.
Many women have asked me what to do in case you are a victim of fraud. In the UK there is now a service called Action Fraud, which is a website and helpline where you can report any time of fraud (including online dating fraud) and get help and support. Please consider sharing your stories with them as well if you are in the UK. Most of these fraudsters hail from countries where it’s harder to do anything about them, especially for your local police force. However, sharing your story with other women will help starve these assholes of money.

Re: Anthony F
TIPS ON SCAMMERS
1. READ WHAT THEY WRITE. DO THEY SOUND LIKE THE STATE OR COUNTRY WHERE THEY SAY THEY ARE FROM? EXAMPLE WHAT MAN IN THE STATES WRITES, "GOD FEARING," IN AN INTRO EMAIL, OR THEY WANT YOUR CHAT ID TO "GET TO KNOW OURSELVES MUCH BETTER.” OUR MEN DO NOT TALK LIKE THAT.
2. IF THEY SEEM TO WANT YOUR CHAT ID, I WRITE THEM THIS.
"I am sorry, but due to the inordinate amount of scammers I receive daily, I do not give out my personal ID. As a gentleman, I know you understand the wisdom in my decision and will communicate with me on tagged."
3. SCAMMERS TEND NOT TO READ YOUR EMAILS, THEY SIMPLY SEND OUT A SERIES OF AUTOMATED RESPONSES TO GET YOU TO GIVE THEM YOUR ID. THEY CANNOT SCAM YOU IF THEY DO NOT GET YOU OFF TAGGED INTO A CHAT SITUATION WHERE THEY CAN FIND THE WEAK SPOTS IN YOUR HEART AND PLAY INTO THEM.
4. HE IS A SCAMMER WHEN THEY GO VERY DEEP, REAL FAST, AND WANT COMMITMENTS OF DEVOTION FROM YOU, SIGHT UNSEEN.
5. IF I THINK I WANT TO TALK TO SOMEONE, I SUGGEST SKYPE VIDEO TO HIM OR HER. ON SKYPE, THERE IS NO HIDING. EVERYBODY HAS TO BE REAL. IT IS FREE AND SCAMMERS WOULD PREFER NOT TO BE IDENTIFIED.
6. DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THEIR CHARM. THIS IS ALL BUSINESS FOR THEM. THEY CAN BE VERY GOOD AT MAKING US FEEL GOOD.
7. SOMETIMES ONE PERSON WILL WRITE THE PROFILE, (A LOT OF THESE ARE WRITTEN BY WOMEN) AND ANOTHER PERSON WRITES THE EMAILS. THEIR ONLY JOB IS TO GET YOU ON CHAT. THEN THE PROS TAKE OVER.
8. TRUST YOUR GUT INSTINCT, IF HE SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.
9. GET GOOD AT IDENTIFYING THE PATTERNS OF SCAM EMAILS. THERE ARE SEVERAL PATTERNS REWORDED Repeatedly.
10. HONESTLY, WOMEN NEED TO GET OVER NEEDING THEIR EGOS STROKED SO THAT THEY DO NOT FALL FOR BULL LIKE, "THE MINUTE I SAW YOUR PICTURE I KNEW MY SEARCH WAS OVER” AND HOW GORGEOUS YOU ARE THAT THEIR HEARTS STOPPED. YEAH RIGHT.
11. BE CAREFUL MY SISTER, THESE GUYS ARE GOOD. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT GIVING HIM YOUR EMAIL IT IS OK. JUST DO NOT EXCHANGE CONVERSATIONS OR CHATS WITH THEM OR ACCEPT INVITATIONS.
FEEL FREE TO SHARE THIS WITH OTHER WOMEN.

Re: Anthony F
WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF A SCAMMER
A) TO IMPRESS YOU WITH GOOD LOOKS AND SOFT CHAT.
B) TO FIND OUT HOW OPEN HEARTED YOU ARE TO TRAGEDY.
C) TO MAKE YOU BELIEVE THEY ARE HONEST AND SINCERE.
D) TO BE ABLE TO SELL YOU ON THEIR GOODNESS AND
MISFORTUNE ALL IN A FEW CHATS.
SCAMMERS BROWSE AGE AND STATUS -
IF YOUR PROFILE STATES YOU ARE SINGLE / DIVORCED/ OR SEPARATED. DEPENDS ON THE SITE YOU ARE POSTING ON - YOU HAVE A GOOD CHANCE OF HEARING FROM A SCAMMER.
-IF YOU POST THAT YOU MAKE A GOOD ANNUAL WAGE, OR RETIRED: YOU HAVE JUST DOUBLED YOUR CHANCES OF HEARING FROM A SCAMMER.
-SCAMMER'S USE THE REAL GORGEOUS FEMALE OR
MALE MODEL PICTURES TO MAKE THEIR TARGET FEEL SPECIAL.
-EVERYONE WOULD LIKE TO THINK A HANDSOME MAN OR WOMAN WOULD BE INTERESTED IN THE AVERAGE JANE OR JOE...NO ONE REALLY BELIEVES IT WHEN IT HAPPENS. HOWEVER, IT MAKES FOR VERY INTERESTING CHAT:
-THE SCAMMER WILL TELL YOU.
-"LOOK'S DON'T MATTER AND GOD INTERVENED IN THEIR DECISION TO CONTACT YOU"
-SCAMMER'S USE THE NAME GOD AND RELIGION AS IF THEY ARE PRE-ORDAINED MINISTERS.
-THE INTRODUCTION OF "GOD" IN THE CONVERSATION IS JUST ANOTHER SELLING POINT TO HOW GOOD THEY ARE.
-THEY ALSO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION...THE POWER OF
RELIGION AND PEOPLE WILL RELATE TO ANOTHER PERSON
IF HE OR SHE GIVES OFF THE IMPRESSION THEY HAVE A SOUL!
-HOWEVER, YOU CAN TAKE MY WORDS TO THE BANK -
-SCAMMER'S DO NOT HAVE A SOUL - THEY ARE CUNNING,
MANY EDUCATED, COLD HEARTED CRIMINALS!!!!!
-IT DOES NOT BOTHER THEM WHEN THEY HAVE COMPLETED A SCAM SUCCESSFULLY AND LEAVING THEIR VICTIM EMOTIONALLY STRAINED, SAD AND MANY TIMES IN DEBT.
-A DEBT MANY CANNOT AFFORD.
-SCAMMERS TOSS AROUND PHONE NUMBERS AND ADDRESSES LIKE WATER: VICTIM'S STATE THEY HAVE THE NUMBER OF THE PERSON BECAUSE HE OR SHE CALLED EVERYDAY.
