WA woman dies after online relationship scam

David Weber reported this story on Monday, March 4, 2013 18:22:00

MARK COLVIN: Australian and South African police are investigating the death of a West Australian woman who fell victim of an online relationship scam.

Jette Jacobs was found dead in a guest house in Johannesburg last month. She'd travelled there to meet a man she'd been talking to over the internet since 2009. She'd sent tens of thousands of dollars to the man, who said he was Nigerian.

One estimate suggests that West Australians are sending about $1 million every month to relationship fraudsters in West Africa. It's believed more is going to swindlers elsewhere in the world.

David Weber reports.

DAVID WEBER: Despite warnings from her family, 67-year-old Jette Jacobs had decided to start a new life with the man. She'd met him online in 2009 and later apparently met him in person.

Jette Jacobs went to South Africa late last year to follow up on his marriage proposal.

Detective Senior Constable Rob Martin of WA Police describes what happened next.

ROB MARTIN: During the period while she was in Johannesburg by herself waiting for this person to arrive, she'd sent approximately $20,000 to him from Johannesburg to Nigeria to assist him with travelling to meet her in Pretoria. From there, sadly, we were notified that on the 9th of February this year, that she was found deceased in her rented villa.

DAVID WEBER: So the person that she was supposed to meet is the one who discovered her body. Does that suggest that she was a victim, in terms of the murder was she a victim of a local crime or of the fraudsters?

ROB MARTIN: We wouldn't be able to say at this point in time that it is actually a murder. We can say that there is suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

It would appear that she certainly appears to be a victim of the overseas fraud, where she has lost pretty much everything that she had. As far as that person who discovered her deceased, whether he had any involvement in her death is too early for us to be able to say.

DAVID WEBER: It's a bit different to, I guess, a relationship fraud where they've used a completely different photograph and identity to pretend that they're somebody that they're not.

ROB MARTIN: Absolutely, this is something which is a bit different.

We don't know at this stage that whether the person that was purporting to be, Jesse was his name, whether it is in fact Jesse or whether he has multiple identities, we haven't been able to firm that up at this point.

DAVID WEBER: Some of the scams we've been made aware of are where the person in Australia never meets the person from overseas, and in fact their life savings go overseas expecting that person to come to Australia. Do we know of any other cases where somebody from Australia has travelled overseas to meet the purported romance?

ROB MARTIN: We've had a couple of occasions as part of our Operation Sunbird investigations, is that we've identified some people who were actually very close to departing to Nigeria to meet -

Police rescue woman from flying to Africa to meet online scammer

After falling for the loving promises of an African fraud, pretending to be a wealthy American proposing marriage, a Western Districts woman has been fleeced of $75,000.

POLICE have twice stopped a woman, 73, from boarding a plane to Africa to meet an online romance scammer who fleeced her of $75,000.

Isabell's daughter, Ann, 48, said she feared if her mother had not been stopped from boarding yesterday's flight to Ghana, she might have been kidnapped and ransomed - or worse.

Pensioner Jette Jacobs, 67, from Western Australia, was found dead in Johannesburg, South Africa, in February after meeting an online scammer.

Victoria Police first tried to discourage Isabell from boarding a flight earlier this year. Ann and WA fraud squad detective Rob Martin finally convinced her to cancel the trip during a stopover in Perth.

After falling for the loving promises of an African fraud, pretending to be a wealthy American proposing marriage, the Western Districts woman is now reduced to cleaning houses and working on a farm to make ends meet.

Victorians lost $8.5 million to online romance scams last year, and $53 million was stripped from the bank accounts of Australian lonely hearts in 2012 alone.

The widowed "American" who scammed Isabell claimed to run a business and said he wanted money to set up an orphanage

Ann said calls and online exchanges were daily and relentless, telling Isabell he loved her and wanted marriage. But the scammer turned out to be a 26-year-old African man.

Ann said there was almost no hope of recovering the money her mother had sent.

"The man knew she had property. He was trying to get her to take out a second mortgage," Ann said.
Callous scammer
Ann the daughter said, 'how could my mother have fallen for this?' She (Isabell) said, 'I've never felt anyone has ever loved me as much as this person.

WA police have identified 22 other fraud victims in six countries outside Australia who were sending money, via Western Union, to Jette Jacobs' love interest, "Jesse Omokoh".

She sent up to $200,000 to Omokoh, and maybe others.

Omokoh has used a social networking site to deny any wrongdoing in the case.

"We are continuing to work with the Major Crime Squad in Johannesburg, where Mrs Jacobs' body was found, as well as authorities in Nigeria, where 'Jesse Omokoh' is apparently based," Det. Sen-Sgt Dom Blackshaw said.

Anyone who wants to discuss a suspected fraud with WA ScamNet can call 1300 30 40 54.

An important message we stress to all our FRIENDS who have fallen foul to a romance scammer

is that once the scam has been revealed, it certainly isn’t over. Scammers don’t just go away – they do what they do best and ‘re-invent’ themselves either as another character or another ‘dream’ Date, all with the final objective to continue taking your hard earned money. All of these situations are what is better known as the “recovery scam”.

Lets look at some common scenarios the scammer uses once they’ve been ‘found out’:

1. “I didn’t steal their pictures….they stole mine!’

In order to create your ideal Date, scammers have to look the part and do so by creating a fictitious character using stolen pictures from the Internet. These are typically from modelling/acting sites or unlocked social networking profiles where they can access a number of photographs of the same individual, in a range of different social settings. (Male victims will typically find their scammers have stolen images from adult actress sites who provide photographs and videos of themselves in a range of undress) . Using reverse image sites such as Google Images or Tineye, it is increasingly easy to find the original source of these photographs.

If a scammer gets caught out using stolen photographs of course they are going to lie about it! The most common excuse they use will be that they themselves are the victims of identity theft. They will be “gobsmacked” that ‘their’ photographs have been stolen. The reality is – the scammer has already worked hard to gain your trust after all so they know it won’t be long before you believe their lies (and you may even feel sorry for them!).

If you find yourself in this situation: It’s time to find a new Date! It simply isn’t worth the risk, or heartbreak dealing with an individual who claims to be a victim of identity theft. If you’re still adamant you want to continue the relationship then take the adequate precautions and have an investigator confirm their real identity with a background check. It’s a small price to pay for piece of mind.Any time you need help, email me in here.im happy to assist!

2. You are contacted out of the blue by someone claiming to be a Government official / Police / Immigration officer / Lawyer / Investigator etc.

Once a scam has been confirmed our reports always contain information about the next stage of a scam. This is typically when a scammer realises they have been ‘found out’ and will often re-invent themselves into another fictitious character in order to extract more money from you. The various ‘characters’ they can claim to be include:

Police / Immigration officer / Government official – You will receive an email/phone call from someone claiming to be the Police who have ‘arrested’ your scammer. They will request an upfront fee in order to process your scammer through the court system and release your funds. The reality: No Government authorities will [b]NEVER charge a fee.

Associate of your ‘Date’ – There are various excuses give why the ‘friend’ will contact you. This includes your “date” has been falsely accused of being a scammer and needs financial assistance to get them out of jail or even that the scammer is currently in jail but wants to compensate you (provided you pay upfront for supposed bank transfers/immigration fees etc). The reality: Whatever the excuse may be, if they’re asking for money up front, it’s all just a scam.

Laywer/Investigator – You will receive an email/phone call from someone claiming to be a lawyer or investigator who wants to help you ‘recover’ your money back. They will state that they can get your money back for you and all you have to do is pay an upfront fee.

The reality:
It is true that if lawyers and Investigators get involved they are likely to charge a fee as they are not Government authorities. HOWEVER, and lets be very clear on this – they will not contact you first and they will never guarantee you they can get your money back.
NEVER engage the use of a lawyer/investigator unless you have conducted the appropriate due diligence on them and confirmed their licence numbers and contact details. As investigators of these dreaded romance scammers we know the extreme difficulties individuals face of pursuing an arrest and recovery of money once a scam has been brought to light.
This is why we promote the use of background checks to confirm your Dates identity PRIOR to sending any money to them.

BUT AS ALREADY STATED......IF HE ASKS FOR MONEY=SCAMMER!!!!!!>>>>>>>>>>>DONT BE FOOLED BY SWEET NOTHINGS AND TERMS OF ENDEARMENT !!

If you find yourself in any of these situations: You are being scammed! Stop throwing good money after bad!

3. You are contacted by a new “Date”

After falling victim to a previous scam, it certainly isn’t worth giving up on love altogether although time certainly heals broken hearts (and empty wallets). Whether you put yourself back on a dating site or not, it’s important to remember that your previous scammer still has the photograph/s you sent them and also your contact details.

It is an unfortunate reality that scammers have been known to pass around a list containing the contact details of individuals who have been successfully scammed in the past. Other scammers will then contact these victims with the belief that these are ‘easy’ targets and will be more susceptible to fall for romance scams.

If you have previously been a victim of a romance scam: Firstly, don’t give up on finding love online – just date smarter. Be wary of anyone contacting you out of the blue by email/instant messenger. You have the right to be suspicious about how they obtained your details. Remember also that if you use the same photographs on your dating profile as before, the scammers are likely to recognise you. If your online Date asks for money, it is ALWAYS a scam. Live and breath by this small and simple sentence. When in doubt, check them out with a background check.

Needless to say Romance Scammers will say anything, and do anything to get your money. With a wide range of services to confirm your Dates true identity, on the Internet there is no longer any reason why you should take chances online.
[size=24]bottom line...........check out every person you talk to, dont be conned into a false sense of security by these smooth talkers........check check and double check!>>IT WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF HEART ACHE AND TOO......BEING RIPPED OFF!
