In Sunde 1986
studied at
the Army Staff
Coll
e
ge
. He became Major and studied at
Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr from 1987 to 1989
before returning to the Army
Staff College
as an instructor
. In 1992 Sunde was promoted LtCol and was appointed
Commander Army
Special Operation Forces
.
He held t
his position until 1996 when he
became
Chief Of Staff in the Nordic
-
Polish Brigade in IFOR/Bosnia
-
Hercegovina.
Returning to Norway was p
romoted to Colonel and
appointed
Commander of
Armoured
Brigade
,
Southern
-
Norway.
He left this position in 1998 to study and
graduated from US Army War College in summer 1999.
As Chief of Plan section
/Department of Operations/ Joint Forces Staff Sunde’s wor
k
included
plans and preparations of deployment of Norwegian military forces into
international operations. Finalising this in 2000 he became Brigader and Inspector of
the Cavalry until summer
of 2002 when he moved abroad to Joint Force Command
Brunssum as
Assistant Chief Of Staff for Operational planning. Already in 2003
Sunde returned home, was promoted Major General and appointed Commander Land
forces at National Joint Headquarters in Stavanger.
Sunde was appointed Chief of Department of Operations and E
mergency Planning in
Ministry Of Defence in 2005
. This work included a substantial focus on operations in
Afghanistan which was very valuable knowledge when he became Norway’s
representative to the NATO’s Military Committee and promoted Lieutenant General
in
2006. Sunde returned to Stavanger
early
2009 and became Commander
National
Joint Headquarters in Stavanger.
Harald Sunde was appointed Chief of Defence and promoted
to
General
on
October
1
st
2009.
Harald Sunde is married to Sølvi
and has
two children
