WASHINGTON (Feb. 4, 2014) -- The Army's new chief information officer and G-6 was promoted to lieutenant general, Jan. 24, by Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Ray Odierno.

Lt. Gen. Robert S. Ferrell took over as the Army's CIO/G-6, Jan. 6, 2014, and was confirmed to the position and new rank by the U.S. senate, Dec. 20, 2013. Ferrell is the first African-American to hold the position.

As the CIO, Ferrell directly advises the secretary of the Army on strategic direction and objectives for and supervises Army command, control, communications, computers and information technology functions.

"The CIO/G-6 is even more important today as the Army stands up a cyberforce and establishes the Cyber Center of Excellence at Fort Gordon [Ga.]," said Odierno, during a ceremony at Fort McNair, in Washington, D.C.

Ferrell serves as the chief of staff's top advisor regarding network, communications and signal operations, and related security, force structure and equipping issues. He oversees a $10 billion annual budget.

"To ensure that the Army can provide an expeditionary and decisive land power," said Ferrell, "we will continue to enhance Army cyber capabilities, modernize our combat training centers and installations, transition network services and applications to a cloud environment, and strengthen information assurance and cyber security."

Ferrell's career spans more than 35 years. He most recently served as commander of the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Previous assignments include Army units in Korea and Europe, and deployments to Bosnia and Iraq.

Ferrell has commanded at every level, from company to brigade, and has served in critical units, such as the 2nd Infantry Division, the 82nd Airborne Division, the 1st Cavalry Division, Special Operations Command and 5th Signal Command.

From Alabama and New Jersey, Ferrell enlisted in the Army and attained the rank of sergeant before leaving active duty to pursue his undergraduate degree at Hampton University in Virginia. After graduation in 1983, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Army Signal Corps. He has earned master's degrees from both Central Michigan University and the U.S. Army War College.

Hampton, Va. - Lt. Gen. Robert S. Ferrell, Army Chief Information Officer/G-6, will give the keynote address at the 121st Annual Hampton University Founder's Day ceremony on Jan. 26 at 11:30 a.m. in Ogden Hall.

During the ceremony, the Presidential Citizenship Award will be presented to Dr. Dianne Boardley Suber, President of Saint Augustine’s University; R. Maxwell Gillespie II, Director of Athletics, Hampton Roads Academy and Capt. Norma J. Hatot, a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service

Founder's Day activities will also include the commemorative wreath placing ceremony at the gravesite of the University's founder, Gen. Samuel Chapman Armstrong, in the Hampton University Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.

Lt. Gen. Ferrell was confirmed on Dec. 23, 2013 by the U.S. Senate as the Army’s highest ranking information officer. He is the first African-American appointed to this position.

As the CIO, Ferrell reports directly to the Secretary of the Army, setting strategic direction and objectives for the Army network and supervises all Army C4 (command, control, communications, and computers) and IT functions. He oversees the Army’s $10 billion IT investments, manages enterprise IT architecture, establishes and enforces IT policies, and directs delivery of operational C4IT capabilities to support warfighters and business users. As the G-6, he advises the Chief of Staff of the Army on the network, communications, signal operations, information security, force structure and equipping.

Ferrell, a native of Anniston, Al, enlisted in the Army and attained the rank of Sergeant. He completed his undergraduate degree at Hampton University and was commissioned in August 1983, as an Army Signal Corps Officer. He received a Master of Science Degree in administration from Central Michigan University and a Master of Science Degree in strategy from the Army War College.

Throughout his career, he has served in Army units in the United States, Korea, and Europe and has deployed to Bosnia and Iraq. In addition to traditional company and field grade level assignments, he has commanded at every level from platoon to Army major subordinate command.

Ferrell has earned numerous awards and decorations, most notably, the Defense Superior Service Medal (2nd Award); Legion of Merit (3rd Award); Bronze Star Medal; Meritorious Service Medal (6th Award), Army Commendation Medal (6th Award), and Army Achievement Medal (2nd Award).

Ferrell is married to the former Monique Doute’ of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, who is also a Hampton University graduate, class of 1985. They have two adult sons. Robert is a graphic designer and photographer; Michael is a Sergeant in the Army.

Key Points:
1.Beware of people traveling to Nigeria for work
2.Beware of them claiming to be stranded in a country
3.Beware of them claiming to be trapped in a Hotel
4.Beware of them claiming they need a check or money
order cashed…and having money forwarded to them.

5. Beware of them telling you they sent you a gift and YOU HAVING TO PAY TAX/DUTIES for it.
6. Beware if their picture on their profile looks like a model or just an average person, which many scammer are doing now.
7. Beware if the picture also cannot be blown up to view.
8. Beware if they propose love and marriage to fast and to
furious.
9. Beware if they claim they will come to you. .if you send
THEM money for a ticket, or visa etc...
10. Beware if they claim to own a company and spell like
your 6-year-old daughter.
11. Beware of key words they may use. Profusely
= soonest, baby, etc and seldom say your actual name.
12. Beware if there are no friends on their profiles
there are many signals that will go off when talking to a
Scammer.
It is important NOT to ignore the little voice telling
you something is not right with this person.

Play it safe:
NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION:
NO MATTER WHO IS REQUESTING IT.
Notice the flood of emails coming via Yahoo on all the lotteries claiming you have won a lottery. Simply delete those emails.
